With summer in full swing, a lot of families are on vacation or taking day long trips. As much fun as this can be, it can be ruined by coming home to a house that has been burglarized.I

In fact, the United States leads the world in burglary occurrences, with about four burglaries occurring every minute (one every 13 seconds).*

So whether you’re out of state, spending the day at the lake or simply at the grocery store, I’ve put together a list of the best home security tips that will help you keep your home safer!

Lock Doors and Windows

Although it is the most obvious precaution, you’d be surprised by the amount of people that leave their doors and windows unlocked, even when they know that they will be gone for an extended period of time.

In a study done by the FBI in 2014 it was reported that over 35% of burglaries occurred by “unlawful entry,” so keep your home locked up! Likewise, don’t keep spare keys outside your home. Instead, give your spare keys to family members and trusted neighbors.

Keeping your home well-lit is always a good idea, especially when it comes to frightening intruders. I imagine that there’s nothing more discouraging to a thief then having a bright light beaming down as they attempt to break into your house. Consider a motion sensor light or a dim light that switches on at night.

Let Them Know

Let burglars know that you have an alarm system! Even if you don’t actually have an alarm system, a simple security system sign in your yard can prevent intruders from attempting to enter your home! Alarm systems can alert both you and the authorities of potential threats.

Lay A Plan

If you know you’re going to be gone for an extended amount of time, then you should take steps and make a strategy to keep your home and possessions safe.

Have a family member, close friend or neighbor occasionally check on your home and make sure that nothing is out of the ordinary.
Consider home security cameras that can help you keep watch if no one can watch your home. And if posted visibly, a camera can help deter burglars!
Either have someone check your mail for you or have the post office hold your mail.
Don’t make it obvious that you’re out of town.

Make it look like you’re home by setting your television and lights on timers. The last tip is what I would choose if I had to pick only one thing that you would retain from my post — Don’t let possible burglars use your social media against you! Avoid posting specific information about the duration of your trip. Also, carefully control your privacy settings so strangers can’t see posts.

Lose The Old Locks

If you ever misplace a house key, it’s important that you replace all the locks to ensure the safety of your home. Similarly, if you move into a new house, change all the locks because there’s no telling who all still has access to the home!
